About me

I work at the University of Bristol as a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences. I teach mammal diversity, evolution, bat biology and bioacoustics. My research is on the ecology of flight and echolocation in bats. I am married to Anna. We have two daughters, Kiara aged fourteen and Ramona (sixteen), and a Bichon Frise dog called Max. I am interested in a wide range of natural history subjects, and my interest in birdwatching was reignited by the recent advances in digital photography. My favourite local birding spots are Chew Valley Lake and the Somerset Levels.

About this site

The links on the left will take you to a month-by-month diary of my birding trips, illustrated with digital photographs. I've also included some links about my research. My favourite images from 2003 and 2004 can be accessed at the links opposite, together with pages from 2005-2008.
