16th-29th. St Ives. Birds seen from the Island included up to 700 Manx shearwaters/minute in the early mornings, 3 Balearic shearwaters, up to 60 common scoter, a dark-phase Arctic skua, up to 3 Sandwich terns, and 4 whimbrel. I also saw 2 hummingbird hawkmoths, up to 3 common dolphins and an ocean sunfish. There was a common sandpiper on Ryan's Field. On 26th I took the Marine Discovery catamaran from Penzance harbour on an ocean discovery trip. We had close views of a Cory's shearwater, saw a couple of harbour porpoise, and scores of common dolphins. Missed the minke whale though! 3rd. The Lost Gardens of Heligan. 2nd. The Eden Project to see The National. Mullein moth larvae were abundant. |
